How Neurotoxins for Platysma Bands Work

How Neurotoxins for Platysma Bands Work?

As we age, many people focus on wrinkles and volume loss in the face; but the neck often reveals signs of aging just as quickly. A common concern is the appearance of prominent vertical cords or "bands" running from the jawline toward the collarbone. These bands are created by the platysma muscle and can contribute to an older-looking neck and less defined jawline. But there is a solution! Neurotoxins, such as Daxxify, can drastically reduce the appearance of mild-to-moderate platysma bands. Please keep reading to learn how the procedure works and what to expect.

What Is the Platysma Muscle?

The platysma is a thin, sheet-like muscle that extends from the upper chest and collarbone area upward across the neck and into the lower face. It plays a role in facial expression, particularly movements that pull the corners of the mouth and jawline downward.

Unlike many other muscles that are buried deeper beneath tissues, the platysma lies very close to the skin's surface. Because of its location, changes in the muscle become highly visible as we age.

When the platysma contracts, it can create vertical bands or cords in the neck. It may also contribute to a loss of jawline definition by exerting a downward pull on tissues in the lower face.

Why Do Platysma Bands Become More Prominent?

Several factors can make platysma bands more noticeable over time.

Natural Aging

As skin loses collagen and elasticity, it becomes thinner and provides less support for underlying structures. At the same time, age-related changes in the platysma muscle can make the edges of the muscle more visible.

Repetitive Muscle Activity

The platysma is constantly engaged during facial expressions, speaking, and certain neck movements. Years of repeated muscle contractions can contribute to the development of visible vertical bands.

Genetics

Some individuals naturally have stronger platysma muscles or thinner skin, which causes neck bands to appear earlier or become more prominent than others.

Weight Changes and Tissue Descent

As facial tissues shift downward with age, the downward pull of the platysma can become more apparent, further emphasizing neck aging and jawline laxity.

How Do Neurotoxins Treat Platysma Bands?

Neurotoxins are so-named because they contain a purified neurotoxin that temporarily relaxes targeted muscles. Our preferred neurotoxin, Daxxify, contains daxibotulinumtoxinA-lanm.

When strategically injected into the platysma muscle, Daxxify reduces the muscle's ability to contract. This decreases the tension that creates visible bands and softens the appearance of the vertical cords in the neck.

In addition to improving neck bands, relaxing the platysma can sometimes create a subtle lifting effect along the jawline by reducing the muscle's downward pull on lower facial tissues. This can enhance the appearance of jawline definition and provide a smoother transition between the face and neck.

How Many Units of Neurotoxin Are Typically Needed?

The FDA-approved dosing for platysma bands varies based on the number and severity of the bands being treated. Typical amounts range from 26-36 units, but again, this will be case by case. In clinical practice, providers may customize treatment based on a patient's anatomy, muscle strength, and aesthetic goals. A consultation is the best way to determine the appropriate dose.

How Long Does It Take to See Results?

Most patients begin noticing improvement by three days after treatment with full effects appreciated by Day 14. As the treated muscle relaxes, the vertical neck bands become less pronounced and the neck appears smoother and more youthful.

How Long Do Results Last?

As with other neurotoxin therapies, results for platysma bands are temporary.

For most patients, results last approximately three to four months before muscle activity gradually returns.

Regular maintenance treatments can help preserve results and may help prevent the bands from becoming as prominent over time.

Will Neurotoxin in the Platysma Restrict Neck Or Facial Movement?

This is one of the most common concerns patients have.

When administered by an experienced injector using appropriate dosing, Daxxify is designed to relax specific portions of the platysma muscle while preserving normal daily function. Most patients continue their normal activities without difficulty.

Patients should still be able to:

  • Turn their head normally
  • Speak and smile normally
  • Swallow normally
  • Perform routine daily activities

While temporary muscle weakness is possible with any neurotoxin treatment, significant limitations in neck and facial movement are uncommon when injections are performed properly by a trained medical professional. We are happy to discuss any and all concerns about muscle function during your consultation.

What Can You Expect During the Procedure?

Daxxify treatment for platysma bands is a quick, minimally invasive office procedure.

Consultation

Your provider will examine your neck both at rest and while contracting the platysma muscle. You may be asked to grimace or tighten your neck so the bands become visible and can be mapped for treatment.

Treatment

A series of small injections are placed along the visible platysma bands and, in some cases, along areas of the jawline. The procedure typically takes only a few minutes to perform.

Recovery

There is little to no downtime. Some patients experience mild redness, swelling, tenderness, or bruising at the injection sites, but these effects generally resolve within a few days. Most people return to work and other normal activities immediately after treatment.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Neurotoxin for platysma bands may be a good option for adults who:

  • Have visible vertical neck bands
  • Desire a non-surgical neck rejuvenation treatment
  • Have good skin quality and mild-to-moderate neck aging
  • Want to improve neck contours and jawline definition without surgery

Patients with significant skin laxity, excess fat beneath the chin, or more advanced neck aging may benefit from combining neurotoxin with additional treatments, such as fillers.
